Electric Chain Hoist or Wire Rope Hoist?
A comparison of electric chain hoists and wire rope hoists by capacity, lifting height, speed, precision and maintenance.
| Feature | Chain hoist | Wire rope hoist |
|---|---|---|
| Typical capacity | 250 kg – 10 t | 1 – 50 t and above |
| Lifting height | Short and medium (limited by the chain bag) | Medium and high; grows with drum length |
| Lifting speed | Low and medium | Medium and high |
| Precise positioning | Very good; true vertical lift | Good; very good with dual speed / inverter |
| Size and weight | Compact and light | Larger and heavier |
| Maintenance | Chain lubrication and wear check | Rope, drum and sheave checks |
| Cost | More economical at the same capacity | Higher; longer life in heavy work |
Choose chain hoist if…
- The load is under 5 tonnes and the lifting height is short
- You do assembly, mould handling or precise placing
- A compact hoist is needed on a monorail or in a tight space
Choose wire rope hoist if…
- The load is heavy (5 tonnes and above) or the lifting height is large
- The hoist works often and fast
- It will be the lifting unit of an overhead crane
In short
For light and medium loads and precise work, a chain hoist is practical and economical. For heavy loads, high lifts and intensive use, a wire rope hoist is preferred.

Frequently asked questions
Which is safer, chain or wire rope?
Both are safe when correctly chosen and maintained. Both should have a brake, limit switches and overload protection.
When should a chain hoist chain be replaced?
When elongation and wear measured at inspection exceed the limit, or if links show cracks or deformation.
Can a wire rope hoist be used on a monorail?
Yes. Wire rope hoists with travelling trolleys are widely used on I-beam monorail lines.
